The Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) will serve to facilitate implementation of suicide prevention strategies within the medical center to help ensure that all appropriate measures are being taken to prevent suicide in our patient population. Activities will include support for the identification of veterans at high risk; coordinating enhanced care when needed. This announcement has been amended to reflect new closing date of 07/05/2022. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. I am a past, current, upcoming VHA Health Professional Trainee (HPT) graduate who has successfully completed or is expected to successfully completed an affiliate sponsored or VA sponsored training program and on track for meeting the requirement at the time of appointment. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. Licensure. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-12 Experience and Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post- training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring. Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program. Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s). Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice. ["Major duties include but is not limited to: Responsible for tracking and reporting all suicide attempts and completions at their facility, including the submission of a monthly report to the Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. Controls the Category I Patient Record Flag as it relates to suicide and limits its use to patients who meet the criteria of being placed on the facility high risk list. Maintains the list of patients who have a Category I Patient Record Flag for suicide and reviews the list at least every 90 days. Manages and oversees the annual aggregate suicide Root Cause Analyses (RCA's) for suicide completions and attempts. Participates in individual RCA's concerning patients who have attempted or committed suicide. Assists the EOC Safety Survey team in determining actions that should be taken to improve the mental health inpatient environment. Establishes relationships with local and state suicide prevention organizations, local crisis line organizations, and local Veteran Service Organizations (VSO's). Develops partnerships with their facility Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) Coordinators, Patient Safety Managers (PSM), Healthcare for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) Coordinators, local Vet Center staff, residential care teams and local mental health teams. This partnership is to assure that patients are assessed and evaluated for suicide risk as appropriate and preventative interventions are in place. Monitors Veterans Health Administration (VHA) performance monitors and measures related to Suicide Prevention Program to assure they are met or exceeded. Establishes performance and outcome standards along with the Suicide Prevention Coordinator Supervisor for the facility Suicide Prevention Program that promote quality and efficiency of services in coordination with the overall goals of the medical center and those of the VISN and VA Central Office. Develops policy and procedures to ensure compliance with the Joint Commission, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and other accrediting bodies and regulatory standards as needed. Identifies unmet needs of veterans who are at risk for suicide and their families and works collaboratively with Suicide Prevention Team, facility, VISN and the Center of Excellence staff to develop and implement solutions. Develops a data-driven, continuous quality improvement program with established goals and outcomes to evaluate and document the program's effectiveness. Ensures that the Suicide Prevention Program is interdisciplinary and fully integrated with the outpatient, residential, and medical programs. Provides accountability for program effectiveness and modification of service patterns to enhance customer satisfaction. Identifies gaps in services and develops a plan, in consultation with Suicide Prevention Team and facility staff that will make available the best possible resources in meeting program needs.
