The University of Colorado School of Medicine invites nominations and applications for Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, one of four campuses in the University of Colorado System, is the major academic medical center in the Rocky Mountain region. With world-class health sciences research, educational and clinical facilities, the CU School of Medicine has established distinctive and highly productive programs, receiving research awards of more than $350 million per year, including more than $200 million from National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. The School’s total annual clinical and research revenue exceeds $1.2 billion per year.
The CU Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has 78 faculty with primary appointments located on the Anschutz Medical Campus and its affiliates and 55 clinical faculty. The Anschutz Medical Campus is home to the University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado and a new Veterans Affairs Hospital scheduled to open in 2018. The campus is one of the largest and most comprehensive biomedical research and clinical care centers in the western United States.
The CU Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, one of the longest-standing departments in the country, has experienced strong financial growth in recent years, driven by consistent increases in clinical productivity, profit, stable expenses and staffing. In recent years, the faculty has supported 140 grants or research awards, provided the highest quality care in rehabilitation medicine and offers cross-institutional educational programs, including a three-year PM&R residency program that matriculates up to 5 to 6 residents per year. Additionally, the Department is the academic home to the School of Medicine’s Physical Therapy Program, which provides a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT). Each DPT class is comprised of approximately 65 students. Recent clinical accomplishments of the Department include participating in the expansion of the Spine Center program, a partnership in the CU Sports Medicine and Performance Center in Boulder and an expanded concussion program at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
The Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves on the School of Medicine Executive Committee. The Chair will have significant leadership experience in an academic medical environment, with responsibility for sustaining superior educational programs, overseeing growth in research programs and leading successful and productive clinical programs. The Chair will be responsible for establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with campus and affiliate partners; enhancing diversity among the faculty, trainees and staff in the Department and excellence in the Department’s educational programs; and assuring transparency in the Department’s administration, management, budgetary planning and implementation.
